In Lucknow, as in other parts of the world, graves mean little to some people, but a search on the internet proves otherwise! What one will find on this blog isn't even 'a drop in the vast ocean' of tears that would have been shed if it were possible to calculate. The names, the sad poetry, quotes and expression of grief of the loved ones all being ground to dust.

Nishatganj Cemetery, Lucknow
The Nishatganj Cemetery is surrounded by encroachments on most of two sides. Where there's no encroachments you have municipal flats stuck right up to the wall from where people throw garbage into the cemetery.( more)
My boyfriend has an ancestor buried here, thanks for the pictures, as even though it's nice to see the cemetery even if it's not the exact grave :) Shame about the conditions around the cemetery though :(
I read those messages only today Sept 1st 2012. I have been looking for my father's grave all my life. I have only found that he - Eric Wilfred James - was buried on March 13th 1943 from the St. Peters Church funeral in what was previously known as the 'Trans-Gomti cemetery'. He is said to be a loco-foreman in EIR, Charbagh, Lucknow. I am now 77 years old and will not be able to go to lucknow again - so any help with a photo would be truly wonderful. Sincerely, Richard James, 49 Foresters Close, Bedford, MK45 3PR England My email id: alberonpro@aol.com - phone: 00 44 1234 381875
Dear Mr James, I'm really sorry that I didn't see your comment earlier. Owing to computer problems etc I wasn't as thorough or upto date with my blog as I'd liked to have been. I will, however, make it a point to search the Nishatgang Cemetery, which is the trans-Gomti butial ground referred to and maybe I'll find it. You must understand that the idea of this blog is to photograph graves that are likely to disappear eventually. As angry as it makes me, I have come to accept that owing to lack of burial space one has to expect the inevitable! If you'd been through my blog you might have come across a grave bearing the name Thomas James and Elsie K. James, my aunt and uncle. Thomas was also in the railway and he died perhaps in 1967 having outlived his wife by a couple of years. I'm not aware of his age but Elsie was around 62 years old so he would have been a few years older. I'm moving my communication to an email to you...
I was unable to fulfill Mr Richard James's request to find his father, Eric James's grave. His father a railwayman, died in 1943 when Richard and his sister were children. The happy news is that Richard has since met his dad's eldest brother's son Maurice James (aged 93) in the UK. As it turned out my uncle, Thomas James, mentioned in the message above, was Richard's dad's eldest brother.
The condition inside is well maintained and graves painted last time I went there I was scared the care taker might scold me if I take pictures so I didn't I will try this time on if you have your ancestor buried here just let me know I will try to take a picture for you guys.
Dear Sir Is it possible for you to locate and post photographs of a grave of Dr. Violet G Stephens and her parents graves which will be nearby hers at the Nishant Ganj Christian cemetry. She was a friend, mentor and guide to my parents and it will be wonderful to get photos of her graves. I have not been able to travel to Lucknow for quite some time now and will treasure the photos . Thanking you for this in advance.
Jan 5, 2015 Dear Sunita, I have just seen your request so I will try and locate the graves you mentioned the next time I'm at the cemetery. Dr Stephens was the principal of Lalbagh Girls School so I suppose I'll be able to find someone to help me. George Shepherd
Dear Sir Thank u Sir but I think there are two people with similar names. The one we knew was working as a Dr at the St Catherine hospital at Kanpur. Am not sure whether she also was a principal at the school you mention because she was really old and was in Kanpur when we met her the last time . I finally found an old diary which has listed the following graves Plot No 3, grave no 74 is her grave, Grave no 52 is her dear mother's who was also a Dr I think. Grave no 76 is her dear father's and grave no 287 is her brother Reggie, I believe the family had purchased these grave areas and when she passed away her dear friend and colleague Dr Lal had her buried as per her instructions near her parent's graves. I would be grateful to get the pictures. Will come to visit these when I come to Lucknow sometime. Thanks to you sir for helping me locate these graves. God bless you.
Dear Sir Was desirous of knowing whether u were able to identify Dr. V.G. Stephens grave at Nishant Ganj. I have a small info to add that as my parents referred to her as either Dr. or Dr. Stephens am not sure whether her name was Violet or Viola. I recently came across an old letter where she has signed as Viola and requesting u to kindly note this. I hope to come sometime either this or next year to pay her my respects hence keen to know the status of her grave.
She also stayed at the school in the premises of the seventh day adventist church I think for some time in her old age ....in a room below the principal's office as indicated in her old letter to my parents.
Dear Sunita, The Stephens graves you have asked about i.e. Dr Viola Stephens and her parents were posted by me on Nov 21, 2015. I am going to put the link here and hope it works. Otherwise go down the the list of posts on the right of the page. http://guavagardens.blogspot.in/2015/11/cleophas-stephens-died-1951-adelina.html
I wanted to thank you for the photo of Nishatganj Cemetery. I too have an ancestor buried here and it is always nice to be able to see a photo of the place of burial.
If you do go back to the cemetery I wondered if you would be good enough to see if her grave is still there and if so possibly take a photo for me. I would be eternally grateful.
Her name is Maude Maria Davies died 22 Jan 1921, the wife of Henry James Davies.
Hello Thank you for the info re the cemetery where I too have a relative buried. I have looked at all your pictures - what a wonderful thing you are doing. Can you please tell me if there are any records of who is in the graves? Amanda from Australia
Hi! My Great Grand Father Rev.Deva Daniel was laid to rest on 31.03.1903 at Nishantganj, Lucknow by his youngest son Mr. Milton Daniel. Can anyone find their grave or burial records?
Brian, the burial records will probably be with the parish priest of St Joseph's Cathedral, Lucknow. Since your ancestor was Anglican and a pastor, which church did he belong to? If it was St Peter's Charbagh, it is possible that church will have a record of death.
Thanks Mr. George. My Great Grand father served in Meerut from 1888 till 1901 when he retired sick and came to his son Mr.Milton Daniel at Lucknow, who was then working as Assistant Teacher in Church Mission High School, Lucknow. His wife Mrs.Phoebe A Daniel is buried in Nishatganj and picture of her grave has given me much hope. My Great Grand Mother is Mrs. Agnes Daniel, who may in all probability is buried in Nishatganj too. Rev. Deva Daniel, my GG Father was ordained at St. Paul's Divinity School at Allahabad in 1888 and thereafter posted to Meerut. I am not sure which CMS Church existed then in Lucknow in 1903. My great grand father was laid to rest in Nishatganj Cemetery in 31.03.1903. Please guide me with any information that you may have. Thank you.
Hi Brian, I don't have much hope finding Rev Deva Daniel's resting place, unless it was buried under earth from a grave being dug alongside. Otherwise I have got every old grave from the Nishatganj Cemetery on my blog. I started this blog when I realised that the old graves were being systematically removed to make room for fresh burials. Burial registers can provide details but chasing them up isn't easy. If I have any doubts about a grave, I photograph it and check my blog. Regards
Hi Mr Shepherd, I was hoping you could locate the grave of Mrs Violet Bothwick (or any other family member). My great grandmother died on the 5th of February 1960 in Lucknow. The Bothwick family were all musicians and may have been known as the Bothwick Entertainers. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
Hi Denise B, So far I've not come across a Bothwick grave, though I have covered the 1960s quite thoroughly. It is a habit of mine to keep checking just in case I have missed out a grave, which has happened in the past. I had Charlie Bothwick ( I think he was Charles?) in mind though I cannot remember hearing of his death. He remained on in Lucknow after the Blake family left for Australia, perhaps sometime in the 1970s. What does the 'B' stand for? Tony Blake, as you will know, died in about 1993 in an accident while on his way back to Chandigarh from Delhi. Rest assured I'm always on the lookout for any missed grave. Regards George Shepherd
Hi Mr Shepherd, Violet Bothwick's husband Nelson Bothwick died earlier and was buried in Agra but I was sure she would have been buried in Lucknow as she was living there at the time of her death. Yes Charlie Bothwick (one of Violet's sons) was my Nana's brother. My Nana's name is Mollie Blake (Bothwick) and one of her daughters is Barbara Blake (Benedict) who is my mother. Tony Blake is my mother's brother and my uncle. My maiden name was Benedict but now Blanchfield. Any information/photos on the Bothwicks/Blakes would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou for taking the time to look. Kind regards, Denise
Hi Denise, AS far as Lucknow goes the only the only one I would like to know about is Chickie Bothwick. Maybe the Pereiras could tell me about him since he lived in a room at the back. Your mum might be able to provide some information since the whole family, except for Tony, went to Australia. Were you born in Chandigarh, since your parents worked there? Regards George Shepherd
Hi Mr Shepherd, Hope all is well with you. I was born in yours and my Dad's hometown of Allahabad but spent most of my time in Lucknow and Chandigarh before leaving for Australia when I was about 6-7 years of age. There was a Charles Bothwick (who died a very very long time ago) and Uncle "Chicko" who lived in Lucknow until his death (both brothers). My Mum and her brothers and sister always called him Uncle Chicko so I'm not sure what his real name was. Unfortunately my Mum died 2 months ago, hence the need to find any information about her family. She told me many stories of India but we never really wrote anything specific. I thought if I started researching Nelson & Violet Bothwick (her grandparents), it might lead me to more information - (my Dad is sure that Violet was buried in the Lucknow cemetery) - so far no luck! Kind regards, Denise
I forgot to tell you that my Dad is on his way to India. He will be visiting Lucknow and will try and contact you to say hello. My Dad (Michael Benedict) and my Mum's sister Agnes Blake)said that your name is familiar so you might know either one of them. My Mum and her family lived at Irene Lodge -11 Lalbagh. Hope to hear from you soon. Denise
Hi Denise, I'm very sorry to hear of your mum's passing. No, your mum and dad didn't really know me though we did meet a couple of times in Chandigarh in 1973. I would have expected Agnes to remember better because of my mum and my brother, Keith and Charlotte Fanthome. Of course it is easier for people who remain in their hometown to remember people who have left! Your dad will go back to the old house and meet the Pereiras who will remember more than I do. What about Carl Blake? If it works out I will meet your dad though it's unlikely I could provide any family information. I was born in Allahabad but where did you see it written? Keep in touch! Regards George Shepherd
Hi Mr Shepherd, yes Agnes remembers you and so does Dad - they were both telling me all these names of people and remembering all the good times. We all keep in touch with Aunty Charlotte & she has come out to Australia many times. My Aunty Agnes told me that Violet Bothwick is buried in Lucknow but there isn't a headstone and no evidence of a grave can be seen now - the same with Uncle Chicko. At least I tried. My Uncle Karl is now retired from teaching - he's got two sons and a daughter who are all doing very well. He lives about an hour and half away. I saw on your profile that you were born in Allahabad. Dad's going to see a few people in Lucknow (his friends the Fig brothers), Pamela at the aged care home so you never know - your paths may cross :) Take care and keep in touch. Denise
I want to get a marbel placed with my fathers name written on the grave, i stay in Chandigarh, who can help me in getting it done as i am unable to get the contact no. of the grave yard. pls help.
Hi, this is a bit of a shot in the dark! I'm doing research into lady doctors who worked in India in the early 20th century. Specifically, I would be really grateful for any information on the following ladies:

Dear Mr George Shepherd, I am interested in locating the grave of Richard Rose 1838 - 1896. He is buried in the Kanpur Cantonment Cemetery. In Section 16. He was the Deputy Postmaster General of Oudh
Can you please help me locate the graves of my two aunts. Jessie Stuart Wood - born 30 March 1911, died 23 June 1931 and Helen Stuart Wood - died 17 August 1927. Both are buried in the Nishatganj cemetery (Trans-Gomti cemetary. Many thanks
