Lakhori bricks

The lakhori bricks lying near a grave, probably a very recent
burial, were a surprise. These flat kiln baked bricks
that were used in all the Nawabi buildings of Oudh,
went out of use in the early part of the 19th century,
maybe even earlier. Is it possible that these are old bricks
that were
reused, bricks from the many building of that
period that were demolished during and after 1857!

The Nishatganj Cemetery was opened by Rev J.I.B Cockin,
Chaplin in 1887 and consecrated by the Bishop of
Calcutta, Edward Ralph, in 1889. It must have been in
use somewhat longer, because Joanna Reghelini Harcourt
was buried here in 1882. The Chiria Jheel Cemetery,
that is being used by Mother Teresa's Mission,
on Sapru Marg (formerly Olliver Road) was in
use during the 1860s and '70s.

Desecration!

There are two large plots from where graves have disappeared
over the last two decades while burials were taking place
in an older portion of the cemetery. Which means, burials could
have taken place here and the oldest graves near the entrance
could have been spared for the time being. The graves that have
been removed date back to the1940s
A 1920s-30s plot
The Lucknow cemeteries are controlled by the Lucknow Burial Board made up of clergymen of
all the denominations, Roman Catholic, Protestant (Churches of Northern India), Believers etc., or at least should include all. It doesn't matter because the people at the cemetery do as they please! How is the money shared? What system is there for creating space, that is, demolishing older graves. How should these beautiful memorials be 'smashed'? Is the job left to boys who play in the cemetery to throw bricks at them, otherwise, how do crosses that have stood for a century get cut down sometimes from the top!
This is the weakness of the community, the meanness and selfishness of the people!
Shortage of burial space, the fear of not being buried, can that be possible? People are reserving burial space, that includes the clergy, which in turn increases the fear. Artificial shortage of commodities that helps push up prices. Hoarders, definitely in India at least, where tonnes of say, onion, is bought from the farmers and stored, to be sold later at several times the buying price! Is this the same as taking a loan, the money paid in advance is spent?
I photographed the grave in this pic a few months ago and it was perfect. Now the cross has been lifted slightly off the base. It will remain like that and then all of a sudden, there will be no cross and no grave. This is a stage by stage demolition that nobody notices, because they don't come to the cemetery to notice anything. Recently someone shared an illustration on Facebook with the words that went something like,"What good are eyes if the brain is dead".
The management of these cemeteries has been left to the grave digger and masons. Actually, Roman Catholic priests have a separate cemetery, at least in Lucknow, at the Loreto Convent.
