Dr Geoff Allen 1927-- 2019

From Vinoth Kumar by email
Mon, 14 Oct 2019
Martinian Dr. Geoff Allen passes away at the age of 92.
This is the sad message received today from daughter Janet
in Hamilton, New Zealand.
"Dad died today at 4:10pm, he passed away
peacefully in his bed. We are all devastated."
May his soul rest in eternal peace. Geoff was
from Lucknow La Martiniere, he was a great
man and left an even greater mark on the people
he encountered. The world has lost a very unique and special
person. He was one of a kind, a truly talented, brilliant, amazing
man. He was also a keen golfer and had a great sense of humour at times
naughty but nice.

Also attached is the last video he sent me.

This plaque at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton hospital says it all....

Waikato Hospital’s first thoracic and vascular surgeon📷
GEOFFREY LOUIS ALLEN
MB.BS, MS (Thoracic) Madras, FACS,FRCS, FRACS
Geoff Allen was appointed the first Thoracic and Vascular surgeon at
Waikato Hospital in 1967
He was born in Peshawar (then British India) in 1927 and attended
La Martiniere College, Lucknow, and Christian Medical College Vellore,
where he was one of the first ten men in a previously exclusively women’s college.
After graduation and training in cardio-thoracic surgery, he was appointed
a consultant in the College Hospital unit, where the first open heart
operation in India was performed.
In 1960, he moved to England for family reasons, and from 1960 -1962
was Senior Registrar, Cardio-Thoracic Unit, Royal Infirmary, Sheffield.
In 1963-1964 he was Senior Registrar, Cardio-Thoracic Unit,Harefield
Hospital, working with prestigious surgeon Thomas Holmes Sellors.
In 1964, he was appointed Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgeon, Green
Lane Hospital, gaining valuable experience with Brian Barratt-Boyes.
In March 1967 he started at Waikato Hospital, doing all the major closed
cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery together with some early paediatric
surgery, and establishment of vascular access for the renal service.
Important New Zealand “firsts” include mediastinoscopy, insertion of a
epicardial leads for a demand pacemaker, radial arterio-venous access
for haemodialysis, and participation in reimplantation of a hand.
After retirement in 1996, Geoff continued, among other interests,
to play golf twice weekly.
He was married to Shirley Mae Connors, a competent surgical ward
Charge Nurse, in 1969, and had three children, David, Janet,
and Christopher. Shirley died in 2016.

British Cemetery, Devlali

Unlike other ancient cemeteries I've visited, that have
been vandalized, this one is mercifully well-preserved.
No willful damage visible; only the ubiquitous plastic
garbage, strewn about, but then that's par for the
course nowadays. The thick foliage of ancient trees
naturally filters sunlight from reaching the earth. So,
no thick plant life at ground level. It was fairly easy
to navigate the cemetery. There are still many extant
non-combatant's graves about. The Commonwealth
War Graves Commission maintains graves the world
over. They've done a fine job of caring for these civilian
graves too, writes Brian Fernandez who has
contributed all these beautiful pics

Message from his son Matt: To all family and friends. The Service to celebrate the life of Dad will be held at St Andrews Church, 1 Camberley Street , Thornlie, at 2pm on Tuesday 27th of August (Next TUESDAY). Please feel free to tell all of Dads friends that may not be on Social Media. As we all know, Dad loved sport - Cricket , Hockey, Rugby (Union of course !!) Boxing... the combative nature and camaraderie were integral values to which he lived his life. As such, please feel free to respectfully wear your team colors to the service. A tribute to Wilmot Simeon
Married with two children Alice and Matthew , and with two Grand Children Chloe and Yazmyn , Wilmot attended Calcutta Martiniere (Hastings House 1944-1952). He was House Captain in 1952 and represented the School in cricket, hockey and rugby; being awarded school colours for cricket. On leaving school in 1952 he completed a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering in 1955. After an apprenticeship and service with ICI Calcutta, Wilmot emigrated to the UK in 1963. There he continued his career in Process Plant Design. After a spell of twenty years in England, Wilmot moved to Perth, Australia in 1982. Here he pursued his profession with considerable success. In his spare time Wilmot enjoyed golf and gardening. He was an active member of the Old Martinians Association in Perth for many years and always staunch Martinian. After a short stay in hospital he passed away peacefully on Friday 16 August 2019. He will be sadly missed by family and friends
