These are three of the several graves that have been picked for restoration. Some of the pictures I have uploaded are of headstones that have been deliberately uprooted. One cannot help wondering what will happen to them.

Lt Col Terry Nolan, the Maratha Light Infantry, Born Nov 24, 1924 killed in action at Husainiwala (Punjab) on Sept 21, 1965.
If memory serves me well, Col Nolan was killed when a shell fired by the Pakistanis
exploded near him shortly before (or after) a ceasefire had been called. His son Michael studied at La Martiniere College, Lucknow and daughter Maureen at the girls' school. Not long after their tragic loss the  family moved to Australia.

Mrs Molly Daniell, as she was better known, remained very active till a year ago when she had a second fall, fracturing her other hip not long after recovering from the first replacement procedure.
Ma'am Daniell, to Martinians, led a busy life after her husband's death in the late 1970s(?) involving herself in Anglo-Indian community affairs and till the end oversaw the well-being of the Dorothy Crosthwaite Homes.

The grave, in the Nishatganj Cemetery, Lucknow as it was in May 2013.

Nishatganj Cemetery, Lucknow

The Nishatganj Cemetery is surrounded by encroachments on most of two sides. Where there's  no encroachments you have municipal flats stuck right up to the wall from where people throw garbage into the cemetery.( more)

Walter Burley Griffin

Walter Burley Griffin, born in 1876 in Maywood near Chicago, won in 1910 an international competition to design the capital of Australia, much as another non-Australian, the Danish architect  Joern Utzon, won the competition to design that Sydney icon, the Sydney Opera House.
As Australia was preparing for its bicentenary celebrations in 1988 a journalist, Graeme D Westlake visited Lucknow in search of Griffin's grave. At the time the Christ Church pastor was a Mr Suraj Masih, who gave Westlake a grave and plot number of the Nishatganj Cemetery. I (George Shepherd) came into the picture as the journalist visited the next best place, The Pioneer, which was housed in the building designed and built by Walter Griffin.
We found the number was to a 'kachcha' grave. I found it hard to believe that an American, of his standing, could, in 1937, have been buried in an unmarked grave. Mr Westlake was as incredulous but accepted the fact. Later an Australian High Commission official visited and then a senator Mr Teague, from South Australia made the trip carrying funds for a memorial that marks the spot today.

I think Chicago has been
replaced. Thought it's not visible in the top pic which is the latest. George Shepherd)

CARLTON EUGENE FIGG,
BORN 12TH JANUARY 1943
DIED 22ND NOVEMBER 2008
                   **
Carlton grew up in Patna, Bihar. He later moved to Lucknow and joined The Pioneer, a century-old newspaper as a reporter, in (maybe) 1967, using Jaywalker as a pen-name for his column 'Around the Town'. He started out at a time when the civic authorities in Lucknow hadn't become 'thick-skinned' nor did reporters concoct stories. Most locals referred to him as Jaywalker. Carlton, who married Audrey Daniel-Palmer, had a brother who was also a journalist. Carlton was survived by his wife, two daughters and two sons.
He was Big Dada to his grand-children.

Audrey Figg who was in ill-health over the past
few years passed on in Pune(?). Her mortal remains
were brought to Lucknow where she was laid to rest at the side of her late husband, Carlton.

Richard James Shepherd 1953-2011

A few days ago (June 17, 2012 perhaps) two members of the family visited the grave in Delhi and took this pic. of the cross on the grave. As noted here below this cemetery is fulled to capacity so now burials are taking place one over the other. Sunita had died six years earlier, almost to the date. The other two pictures of grave were taken at the time of Richard's funeral and the candles below were lit just after the burial when it had turned dark.

My brother,RICHARD JAMES SHEPHERD, was laid to rest late evening on Wednesday, Jan 5, 2011 at the Indian Christian Cemetery, Pahar Ganj, Old Delhi. Richard had liver cancer which was discovered in the last stages. He worked at Moets restaurant, Defence Colony market for about 20 years. Born on Oct 19, 1953, he was the fourth son of IVAN DOUGLAS SHEPHERD & TERESA ELLOISE SHEPHERD of Lucknow. He is survived by his four brothers.
The cemetery has no more burial space and has been thus for several years. Burials take place in graves that have to be dug up with permission of surviving relatives.
