Jullundur RA Cemetery

Gone forever is the memorial and resting
place of Fl Lt Frederic Pereira killed
in 1971 in the brief war with Pakistan.
widow)
The graves in this old cemetery are being
systematically demolished so that at a future date
the land can be used for other purposes
without let or hindrance. A local church

was, reportedly, instructed to stop using this
cemetery.

Flt. Lt. Frederick L. Pereira killed in action 1971

Below is the Postscript of the blogpost on Flt Lt Pereira
taken from Bharat Rakshak, a website
dedicated to India's armed forces
Today, the location of LF Pereira has been lost due to neglect. The
diocese of Jullundur (St Mary's Church) stopped using the
RA Cemetery for Catholic burials, and the Cemetery
suffered neglect, as a result of which, sadly, it is not
possible to locate Flt Lt Pereira's grave today, even
though the grave  and the head-stones were solid
marble, there was no trace of his grave. Last year,
at the request of a senior Veteran friend of Wg Cdr Ravi mani,
Lt Gen Dilip N. Desai, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (18 CAV), the GOC
of 1 Armd Div sent across a search party to Jullundur to find
Flt Lt Pereira's grave-sadly, the entire cemetery is in a
shambles, and most of the grave stones and slabs are
nowhere to be seen. The last resting place of a
war hero is no longer known.

RIP Lawrie!!

WhatsApp message from an old friend
Brian Fernandez, son of
Late Col Leonard T Fernandez to this
blogger
Strange how one learns so much while searching
for just one particular fact. I've been on the
lookout for clues of Bruce my late bro's
grave in Jalandhar. Yesterday I came across
a diary of my dad's with details of our family.
I had a rough inkling of the cemetery, but there's
no reference of it to be found on the net.
Until yesterday that is! Anyway, I managed to
'pinpoint' it but apparently it's been overwhelmed
by an army golf course. But, what I found
interesting and of personal interest, was
the discovery that the cemetery also happens
to be the final resting place of a dear friend
from our Dhaula Kuan, Central Vista days in
Delhi. Let me start at the beginning. You'll
have to piece my story together from the visuals.
Once I'd got the name of the cemetery from
my dad's details I had to establish the
address. I was fortunate there. R.A. does stand
for Royal Artillery Cemetery. That reference
threw up 'Lawrence Pereira' the person
whom I referred to. He was a regular visitor
to our home, especially since he was
then wooing a young army nurse, an AI
who was also a good friend of ours. Later
they would marry and then sadly Lawrie
as we knew him would lose his life in
Dec '71. If all that is confusing maybe these
links below will help you get the drift...

CWGC graves in the Bandariabagh Cemetery,  Lucknow -- March 2018 Several graves with the original headstones in good condition were
destroyed just for uniformity. Before I came to know of of the CWGC plan I had photographed century old graves where the headstones,
deliberately uprooted.
lay in the dirt.
I couldn't help wondering what happened to uniformity when I
spotted some graves that had been
repaired with the original sandstone
headstone retained. That is what could have been a part of the plan -- to retain headstones except where
there was serious weathering and damage. Some graves in the old Pines Cemetery, Nainital (name taken from the google satellite map)
also had CWGC graves where the original headstones were retained.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission must have spent a
considerable amount of money to preserve graves all over he
globe. However, in several places the uniform white headstones
seem to have fallen short. There are some in the Bandariabagh
Cem.,  Lucknow. I was surprised to find that graves in very
stable condition were dismantled, with some headstones being
replaced with the  imported, white ones while others were not.
So, where is the uniformity?
