Hilda John, an inmate of the Dorothy Crostwaithe Homes, who had old-age health problems passed away the same day as George Gunther during the hottest days this summer (2014).
Her younger sister, Thelma, had passed away several months earlier.
I came to know the John family in the 1970's when they lived in Khandari Lane, Lalbagh Lucknow. The father, who had worked for the MES, had already passed on. There were the mother, eldest brother, Terry and Hilda and Thelma. Brother Gerry, who drove a cab and was the first of the siblings to pass on was married and was survived by his wife, Rita nee Vance, a daughter and three (?) sons.
George Gunther
The Gunther family were from Ranchi, as George once told me, though he had spent some years working in Calcutta.
Two of his sisters are presently living in the Crostwaithe Homes, one a spinster and the other a widow. The youngest sister, Bunny, retired from La Martiniere a few years ago. Her husband, Russel Carville, an old Martinian, retired after a short stint as vice principal of his old school where he spent most of his teaching career.
In loving memory of
GEORGE BERNARD GUNTHER
29 April, 1946 - 28 April, 2014
A devoted son and a dearest brother
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you Home.
