In Lucknow, as in other parts of the world, graves mean little to some people, but a search on the internet proves otherwise! What one will find on this blog isn't even 'a drop in the vast ocean' of tears that would have been shed if it were possible to calculate. The names, the sad poetry, quotes and expression of grief of the loved ones all being ground to dust. "...We always say that the history of a parish is in its graveyards..." Husband of Margaret (Antunis) Cowasji,
who has since passed on, Sammy was
a railway official under tremendous
pressure from corrupt clerks and
contractors who were involved in
bungling in the employment of
daily wagers. A local newspaper,
now defunct, had carried a series of
articles highlighting this under the
caption: Cowasji papers. His sudden
death initially seemed suspicious
but was finally put down to a
heart attack.

CWGC Bandariabagh Cem., Lucknow
Pte J. Scaife, Royal Welch Fusiliers, died July 1920, aged 22 and Sergt Sidney Down, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, died June 1920, aged 29 |
Visited Bandariabagh Cem with a cousin on a very warm March 2018 morning |
destroyed just for uniformity. Before I came to know of of the CWGC plan I had photographed century old graves where the headstones, deliberately uprooted.
lay in the dirt.
I couldn't help wondering what happened to uniformity when I
spotted some graves that had been
repaired with the original sandstone
headstone retained. That is what could have been a part of the plan -- to retain headstones except where
there was serious weathering and damage. Some graves in the old Pines Cemetery, Nainital (name taken from the google satellite map)
also had CWGC graves where the original headstones were retained.
