Janet Anna Bonarjee, 70 yrs died 1943

With the rainy season comes long grass and shrubs
that conceal most of the cemetery. Visitors to this
grave would have had a path cleared on request.

The parents of Mr Trevor Oscar Halpin,
father of Gillian Nellie Jolliffe who was
married Mr Jack N Jolliffe. A friend of
this blogger was told sometime earlier
that Mr Halpin would visit Devlali in the
1980s. Mr Halpin was a tenant at the
residence of Maj Gen Freemantle, according
to his grandson Trevor Jolliffe. He left
for the UK in 1990-91.

Recorded at the time of posting these
photos
Trees have torn this grave asunder!
It is normal to have tall grass and
shrubs spring up during the monsoon,
a period when the cemetery is largely
inaccessible. I was passing by and
noticed a path cleared. This happens
when someone in advance tells
the incharge that they need to reach
a particular grave.
A few weeks ago when the grass was
still under 5 ft I had photographed the
grave of Sarah Chakko and I discovered
the visitor needed to reach the same
grave. I then noticed this grave and it looked as if a slab of marble was
uprooted to be carried away. Of course I could be wrong!
Going back to the 1960's I remember a Mr Halpin visiting the Monks at Lawrence Terrace. He had a daughter, Gillian, who married a Mr Jolliffe who worked for Union Carbide. I think he was from Calcutta and moved back there after retirement.
Gillian's mother, Ruby Peacock Halpin passed away in Allahabad in 1970.

At Rest
This is a plot that was in
use more than a century
ago and is being reused.
The dismantling of memorials
isn't carried out according
to any plan except that
till now burials take place
between the older graves
after and demolishing
two graves because the
space inbetween isn't
sufficient. As the digging
proceeds the earth is
thrown to the side covering
a grave in the process.

It is unfortunate that I
couldn't make out the
name on this grave though
I did my best. The pitting
of the stone has all but
wiped out the name.
This was the second time
I went back to the grave
and photographed it hoping
that emery paper would
help sharpen the lettering to
no avail.
