In Lucknow, as in other parts of the world, graves mean little to some people, but a search on the internet proves otherwise! What one will find on this blog isn't even 'a drop in the vast ocean' of tears that would have been shed if it were possible to calculate. The names, the sad poetry, quotes and expression of grief of the loved ones all being ground to dust. "...We always say that the history of a parish is in its graveyards..." Carlton Eugene Figg died 2008, Audrey Rachel Figg 1945-2014

CARLTON EUGENE FIGG,
BORN 12TH JANUARY 1943
DIED 22ND NOVEMBER 2008
**
Carlton grew up in Patna, Bihar. He later moved to Lucknow and joined The Pioneer, a century-old newspaper as a reporter, in (maybe) 1967, using Jaywalker as a pen-name for his column 'Around the Town'. He started out at a time when the civic authorities in Lucknow hadn't become 'thick-skinned' nor did reporters concoct stories. Most locals referred to him as Jaywalker. Carlton, who married Audrey Daniel-Palmer, had a brother who was also a journalist. Carlton was survived by his wife, two daughters and two sons.
He was Big Dada to his grand-children.
Audrey Figg who was in ill-health over the past
few years passed on in Pune(?). Her mortal remains
were brought to Lucknow where she was laid to rest at the side of her late husband, Carlton.
AUDREY RACHEL FIGG
17TH JULY 1945-7TH JULY 2014

David Lyle Thoburn died 1905
The grave of David Lyle Thoburn in the Nishatganj Cemetery, Lucknow. Whether the grave survives today is not known. I was unable to discover what David's relationship was with Isabella Thoburn, in whose name IT College, Lucknow was founded.
Since I put this picture on my blog Lyle T has left a comment saying that David Lyle Thoburn was the nephew of Isabella Thoburn.

Richard James Shepherd 1953-2011

A few days ago (June 17, 2012 perhaps) two members of the family visited the grave in Delhi and took this pic. of the cross on the grave. As noted here below this cemetery is fulled to capacity so now burials are taking place one over the other. Sunita had died six years earlier, almost to the date. The other two pictures of grave were taken at the time of Richard's funeral and the candles below were lit just after the burial when it had turned dark.My brother,RICHARD JAMES SHEPHERD, was laid to rest late evening on Wednesday, Jan 5, 2011 at the Indian Christian Cemetery, Pahar Ganj, Old Delhi. Richard had liver cancer which was discovered in the last stages. He worked at Moets restaurant, Defence Colony market for about 20 years. Born on Oct 19, 1953, he was the fourth son of IVAN DOUGLAS SHEPHERD & TERESA ELLOISE SHEPHERD of Lucknow. He is survived by his four brothers.
The cemetery has no more burial space and has been thus for several years. Burials take place in graves that have to be dug up with permission of surviving relatives.

Bailey Guard Cemetery (Updated)
These pictures of the Bailey Guard Cemetery were taken several years ago. The cemetery is located in the Aliganj part of Lucknow coming under the Mandiaon police circle which was the Cantonment at the time of the mutiny. Subsequently, for strategic purposes or whatever it was moved to the present location.
