In Lucknow, as in other parts of the world, graves mean little to some people, but a search on the internet proves otherwise! What one will find on this blog isn't even 'a drop in the vast ocean' of tears that would have been shed if it were possible to calculate. The names, the sad poetry, quotes and expression of grief of the loved ones all being ground to dust. "...We always say that the history of a parish is in its graveyards..." George Eccleston died 1910
In Loving Memory of
GEORGE ECCLESTON
LA MARTINIERE COLLEGE, LUCKNOW
WHO DIED ON APRIL 6TH 1910
AGED 59 YEARS
-----
PEACE PERFECT PEACE
--------
THE CUP WAS BITTER THE STING SEVERE
TO PART WITH ONE WE LOVE SO DEAR
THE TRIAL IS HARD WE'LL NOT COMPLAIN
BUT TRUST IN CHRIST TO MEET AGAIN
(Nishatganj Cemetery)
(George was the Junior Sgt at La Martiniere College, according to Fibis database.
A Eccleston is on the Roll of Honour 1914-1918 at La Martiniere College, which means he represented the college in WWI. Would that mean he was the son of George? The database also mentions
a Lizzie Eccleston who was at La Martiniere Girls School in 1897)

RB and Lianne Pearce thank you for your comments! For some strange reason my
reply isn't getting published. Attempts to have it rectified have failed, a very humbling experience for someone who thinks he controls what gets published!!

Cecilia Josephine D'Rozario died 1900
![]() |
| Nishatganj Cemetery, Lucknow |
Sacred To The Memory
of
MRS CECELIA JOSEPHINE D'ROZARIO
WHO EXPIRED ON 29TH JANUARY 1900
AFTER LEAVING AN IMPRESSION TO HER DISCONSOLATE HUSBAND AND SONS AND OTHER RELATIVES OF HER CHRISTIAN LIFE AND GOODNESS FOR THE PERIOD OF 50 YEARS
* * *
Hold short sweet rose have all thy beauties bee
An hour they bloomed and now no more are seen
So human grandeur fades and dies away
Beauty and wealth remain but for a day
But virtue remains for ever in the mind
In her alone true happiness we find
The perfume slays although the rose be dead
So virtue lives when every grace is fled
BLESSED ARE THE DEAD WHICH DIE IN THE LORD
THE REST FROM THEIR LABOURS AND THEIR
WORKS DO FOLLOW THEM.
(Scrubbed the distorted, lead-filled lettering with a wire brush to be able to read it. Hope I got it right!)
