In Lucknow, as in other parts of the world, graves mean little to some people, but a search on the internet proves otherwise! What one will find on this blog isn't even 'a drop in the vast ocean' of tears that would have been shed if it were possible to calculate. The names, the sad poetry, quotes and expression of grief of the loved ones all being ground to dust. "...We always say that the history of a parish is in its graveyards..." The inscription was difficult to read
In Memory of
HENRY FRANCIS

DIED 6 APRIL 1896

I'll have to examine the inscription once again because the puzzling part is that the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh only came into being in 1902.

Hilda and Thelma John 2014
Her younger sister, Thelma, had passed away several months earlier.
I came to know the John family in the 1970's when they lived in Khandari Lane, Lalbagh Lucknow. The father, who had worked for the MES, had already passed on. There were the mother, eldest brother, Terry and Hilda and Thelma. Brother Gerry, who drove a cab and was the first of the siblings to pass on was married and was survived by his wife, Rita nee Vance, a daughter and three (?) sons.
George Bernard Gunther 1946-2014
The Gunther family were from Ranchi, as George once told me, though he had spent some years working in Calcutta.
Two of his sisters are presently living in the Crostwaithe Homes, one a spinster and the other a widow. The youngest sister, Bunny, retired from La Martiniere a few years ago. Her husband, Russel Carville, an old Martinian, retired after a short stint as vice principal of his old school where he spent most of his teaching career.
In loving memory of
GEORGE BERNARD GUNTHER
29 April, 1946 - 28 April, 2014
A devoted son and a dearest brother
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you Home.
