In Lucknow, as in other parts of the world, graves mean little to some people, but a search on the internet proves otherwise! What one will find on this blog isn't even 'a drop in the vast ocean' of tears that would have been shed if it were possible to calculate. The names, the sad poetry, quotes and expression of grief of the loved ones all being ground to dust.
"...We always say that the history of a parish is in its graveyards..." Passage West (from a blog and book by Jim Murphy)

Walter Douglas Bayly 1858
SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF WALTER DOUGLAS BAYLY Died 1858, (Lucknow Residency Cemetery)
What is the problem? Why can't I edit my blog? I can't log in. Last night I wrote here and immediately it miraculously opened up, however, later I wanted to edit a post of a year ago and I couldn't!!
I like you pictures very much! However, I can't really agree that there would be no point in keeping the residency cemetery! It is a part of history and is a well documented grave yard - there exists a detailed plan which marks all the graves and has all the names listed with grave numbers. It is a matter of documenting the cemetery correctly. Quite a number of people, including the Archaeological Survey of India are working in preserving this cemetery and on my next visit to Lucknow I shall complete the transcription and photography of it in order to document it for a digital archive. Even without the names, the residency cemetery remains historically important. Best wishes, Eva
Your work interests me for obvious reasons. My email address is georgeshepherdlkw@gmail.com and while I write this I don't even know whether you will receive it.
Thanks for expressing your appreciation, however, I didn't mean one should do away with the cemetery, but the graves are fast decaying, despite the attention they have had from the ASI. I am a regular visitor to the Residency as well as the other cemeteries in Lucknow as my blog will show. Thank you for the interest! Best wishes George
