He served the Indian Railways for 38 years working
on steam engines as a fireman. Not long after he switched
over to the mechanical side. He served the Northern Railway
a full 27 years rising to mechanical engineer and was transferred
to NR HQ at Baroda House, New Delhi as DME in 1975. He retired
in 1986 as Dy Chief Mechanical Engineer but served for another
two years as consultant to Rail India Technological and Engineering
Services (RITES)
He is survived by a daughter, Glenda, son, Adrian and grandchildren.

reached out and won the love and respect of people of all ages.
In fact when a younger person called him "Mr Booth", he would look around and quip, "I can't see my Dad anywhere here". The veteran railwayman and stalwart of the Anglo-Indian community who passed away recently following age-related complications bridged the generation-gap with rare aplomb, and had left behind a host of friends, admirers and well-wishers in Lucknow, Delhi and latterly Pune. At a memorial service at his much-loved Frank Anthony Public School several people recalled associations that stretched over six decades.
Mally had two passions in life: the railway and his miscroscopic minority community.
A leading Mechanical Engineer who served the Northern Railway, Railway Board and RITES with distinction, he wass "the last word" on locomotives. Not surprisingly, he helped established the National Railway Museum in the Capital to help conserve the heritage of the "permanent way". So, until recently, he was frequently consulted by his successors to guide them when facing problems.
After retirement he plunged himself into community affairs, toiled tirelessly and despite a no-nonsense air, injected compassion into the granting of scholarships etc. Though he never arrogated unto himself the accolade of "educationist", he was proud to serve on the managing committee of many A-I schools.
Mally had a special brand of humour and an inexhaustible stock of "naughty jokes". When a sweet young thing teased that he was a wicked old man he shot back, "I may be wicked, but not old", with a disarming twinkle in the eye. No wonder that so many said that while they mouned his passing, they felt privileged at having so many happy memories to recall.

OBITUARY
Mr. M.D. Booth, former Senior Vice President of the All India Anglo Indian Asosociation, former Vice President of All India Anglo Indian Education Institution and a former Senior Member of the Board of Govenors (Managing Committee) of The Frank Anthony Pubic School, New Delhi left for his heavenly abode on Saturday, April 28, 2018.
The President and Executive Committee of the All India Anglo Indian Association, Delhi Branch record their profound grief and condolences at his passing and remember with gratitude his significant contribution to the growth and development of the school. May God grant the family the fortitude and courage to bear this great loss. May his soul rest in Eternal Peace.

A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, May 3, 2018, in the Multi Purpose Hall of The Frank Anthony Public School, New Delhi at 11 a.m. Mr Booth who passed away in Pune was cremated and his ashes brought to New Delhi to be buried at
York Cemetery where his wife was buried decades earlier.

ReplyDeleteThanks for this -- Dad's date of birth is 16th Feb 1930 -- but his railway age was two years older, because he wanted to join and bluffed his age -- the only person I know of who made himself older instead of younger!
He was on the Northern Railway in Lucknow for a record 27 years without being transferred -- in fact, his colleagues called him the Third Imambara! He was transferred to Northern Railway Headquarters at Baroda House, New Delhi in 1975, as Divisional Mechanical Engineer, retiring in 1986 as Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer, after which he worked as a consultant in RITES (Rail India Technological and Engineering services -- I think) for two years or so.
The Memorial Service at FAPS was beautiful -- Peter Fanthome, David Hilton, Lancelot Fuller and Aashrita Abraham spoke and touched the hearts of the family with their tributes and raised smiles with their anecdotes. The burial of the ashes in Mum's grave as he always wished made us feel we had put him to rest where he belongs.
