"THE LIGHT HAS FROM OUR
HOUSEHOLD GONE..."
In Ever-Loving Memory
of
OUR DEAR SISTER
DR MISS S.S. MISRA
WHO PASSED AWAY SUDDENLY
ON 8TH FEBRUARY 1937
AGED 62 YEARS, 6 MONTHS AND 23 DAYS
LEAVING BEHIND HER A LARGE CIRCLE OF
RELATIVES...
ERECTED BY HER SORROWFUL BROTHERS
AND SISTERS
In a caste-based society like in India, the name
indicates the caste and Misra is at the top, and
it has always been said that Christian missionaries used inducements to
'reap' the souls of the lower castes; in other words, the poor, oppressed
sections of society! Here we have a doctor from a Pandit family who was
a Christian! This is just the way the mind works while pausing at a graveside...
you never have an answer!!

Dear Mr. Shepherd, I totally agree with your comment. I have personally known Anglican priests with surnames belonging to high caste Hindus like Late Rev. Tiwari (Lucknow), Late Rev. Dinanath Pathak (Pune), Rev. Pandey (Lucknow) and the first woman priest in the CNI Rev. Pearl Prashad (Lucknow). All of their ancestors would have been high caste Hindus few generations ago. Do we still need to question the motive of our missionaries... something to think about.
