*
The parents of Percy, Osman, Leslie,
Herman and Pansy. I do not know whether there
were more members. Several months
ago a friend living in Devlali, Maharashtra asked me if I knew
the Late Osman Swing, buried in the cemetery there,
who was from Lucknow. The name was familiar but I was not
sure. There were families by that name but I couldn't recall
 to which family he belonged.
After posting pics of these two graves he again asked me
whether Osman was related to them. I had to find out also to
satisfy my curiosity. I then found Herman Swing
on facebook!
Retired from the Indian Army and living in
Hyderabad, Herman gave me some information
about his family, details that any acquaintance or
neighbour could safely divulge to a casual friend.
People normally do not like talking to a stranger
about family and Herman was no different.

Herman grew up at Helms building so to
most people they were the Helms Building Swings
by way of identification. Much has changed in
Lucknow over the last two or three decades so has
Valmiki Marg, formerly Rutledge Road, where
 Helms building is situated.
While there still are some families living on this road
a greater portion has been taken over by shops dealing
in automobile parts.
During those years there were two other Swing families, one at
Maqbara, Hazratganj and the other in Lalbagh near the
Cupid Bakery. The gateway to the Hashman compound
separated the bakery from a billiard saloon that carried the
Swing name. This family sold out and went to Joelikote,
Nainital sometime in the 1980's. The Hashman residence
has been demolished so has the Swings house. Cupid
Bakery is still going strong.
Herman said that all three families were related the others being
his father, Alfred's two brothers.
