In Lucknow, as in other parts of the world, graves mean little to some people, but a search on the internet proves otherwise! What one will find on this blog isn't even 'a drop in the vast ocean' of tears that would have been shed if it were possible to calculate. The names, the sad poetry, quotes and expression of grief of the loved ones all being ground to dust. "...We always say that the history of a parish is in its graveyards..." Passage West (from a blog and book by Jim Murphy)
This is my Great Uncle's grave. He was the son of George Eccleston - Junior Sergeant at La Martiniere School where he and his siblings (6 or 7 of them) went during the early 1900s. His mother was called Eliza (Pearce). The family were really close to Bishop Barnes who had a great influence in the children's lives and was a father figure to them when their own father, George, died. My granny had a picture of the Bishop which she kept all her life and which my uncle (her son)now has. Somewhere I have noted that Henry Charles was at some point deputy postmaster general of Lahore but I have not confirmed that and would welcome any further information about him. He was married to a one Emma Sarah Singleton Harvey, according to records I have seen. He was born and christened in Lucknow. One of his siblings died in the siege of Kut Al Almara; another - Frederick was ordained and moved to Australia after Partition; my granny was Ethel Beatrice and she and her husband Horace Twigger returned to the UK eventually after a spell in Malaya.
ReplyDeleteThis is my grandfathers grave. He died before I was born in 1949. He had two children, Joan and my father Richard Albert George Eccleston. He also had a step daughter Phyllis Esme who died during childbirth. My grandmother Emma returned to the UK in 1947.
