In Lucknow, as in other parts of the world, graves mean little to some people, but a search on the internet proves otherwise! What one will find on this blog isn't even 'a drop in the vast ocean' of tears that would have been shed if it were possible to calculate. The names, the sad poetry, quotes and expression of grief of the loved ones all being ground to dust. "...We always say that the history of a parish is in its graveyards..." Passage West (from a blog and book by Jim Murphy)
Thank you very much for this. I am descended from his father, Donald, through his younger brother, Norman Chester McLeod. Donald McLeod is such a common name that I have never been able to work out who exactly he is, but this gravestone has provided more information. I do know that Roderick went to Bishop Cotton School and that he had a nephew, born 1905, named after him.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to see you comment but I really should have seen this earlier. I would have been happier still if there was a name at the end of the note.
ReplyDeleteStill thanks!
George Shepherd, Lucknow
My name (the commentor above) is Joanna Hopkins (Jo). My mother was Anne Hazel Margaret Patten Thomas, her mother was Sybil Margaret McLeod (born in India) and her father was Norman Chester McLeod, also born in India. This gentleman was his oldest brother. His father's wife, Hannah Maria McLeod, was buried in Meerut in 1874. I can't find out anything about her or about Donald. But I wanted to say thank you - your photograph helps to fill in gaps and I am very appreciative!
ReplyDeleteThank you Joanna for responding and the appreciation! There were McLeods in Allahabad and Lucknow a few decades back.
ReplyDeleteHi, me again! You came up again in a thread, because this gentleman's nephew, Donald James McLeod, married Doris Muriel Lancaster, Percy Joseph Lancaster's daughter, and you have corresponded with Annabel, his great-grand-daughter. That has filled in another load of gaps for me, though I am still hoping to solve the Hannah Maria McLeod parentage conundrum!
