In Lucknow, as in other parts of the world, graves mean little to some people, but a search on the internet proves otherwise! What one will find on this blog isn't even 'a drop in the vast ocean' of tears that would have been shed if it were possible to calculate. The names, the sad poetry, quotes and expression of grief of the loved ones all being ground to dust. "...We always say that the history of a parish is in its graveyards..." MRS CONSTANCE GRACE BOWMER
Died circ 1954
(Blogger: Several years ago I came
across this grave, then, on subsequent
visits couldn't find it. Obviously, I had
been looking in the wrong place. I
was familiar with the name because
Mrs Bowmer lived at 17 Lawrence Terrace,
Lucknow and my parents had bought
her dressing table which is still with me.
I checked the FIBIS database for the surname
but only found Boehmer, many Bambers, then
Boomer and Bowmar and some other variants.)

Alexander William Carter 1903-1965
ALEXANDER WILLIAM CARTER
Born April 29th 1903
Died March 10th 1965
It is fortunate that I was able to
contact Ian Carter, settled in Europe from his youth, who provided me with information of his father. Ian writes: He was born at Moradabad April 29th 1903 to Thomas and Helen Carter. Tom Carter, my grandfather was a guard on the railways.
My father, Alec, attended Sherwood College, Naini Tal, then took diplomas in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. His first job was working as an engineer for my maternal grandfather, John Ramble, ran the Standard Electrical Co., located at what later became Faridi Building, near the Mayfair Cinema in Lucknow. He was also a keen gardener and grew, among other things, huge chrysanthemums. He was also a good shot during the duck-shoots on the jheels around Lucknow.
He contracted typhoid three times in his lifetime but otherwise kept excellent health. He was a perfect, though rather reserved, gentleman.
He died peacefully in his sleep at A9 Lawrence Terrace Lucknow.
(Blogger: The Carter family lived at 19 Lawrence Terrace before moving to the blocks of flats in 1959)
