In Lucknow, as in other parts of the world, graves mean little to some people, but a search on the internet proves otherwise! What one will find on this blog isn't even 'a drop in the vast ocean' of tears that would have been shed if it were possible to calculate. The names, the sad poetry, quotes and expression of grief of the loved ones all being ground to dust. "...We always say that the history of a parish is in its graveyards..." Passage West (from a blog and book by Jim Murphy)
I think this is the grave of Ted Barker's wife. He was the Bursar in the Martinere in the '70s, after retiring from the Civil Service. He was a friend of my parents and passed away a few years ago in Bangalore. I think his daughter Mary must have been in Loreto College around the same time as Tessa Dignum -- she used to teach in Kanpur, as far as I remember.
ReplyDeleteWho do I address in my reply? I had an idea but wanted needed confirmation. I remember Mr Barker but did not remember his first name. I suppose the post of Bursar was created for Mr Barker and later came Lt Col Rosario. I remember Mr Barker visiting the Mr and Mrs Monk at Lawrence Terrace along with his daughter. He drove a Standard 10 the same as Mr AC Grice, MLA.
DeleteSorry for not signing off -- it's Glenda.
DeleteHi Glenda, I should have guess but because of my poor net connection I rush through with whatever I need to do. Ted is usually short for Edward and maybe some other names, right? Thanks for the input!
